Lucknow, December 3, 2009. We were getting regular complain of violence by a stone cutter community in Lucknow. We tried to convince them that violence is not a solution. In last two weeks, situation has got worsened as violence by stone pleating and poisoning of cattle's were being reported regularly. We decided to have a meeting with them on 3rd of January. But unfortunately, in our presence they start once again fighting with each other. At that moment we had only two options, first asking Police to control by force, but philosophically I am against it as morality can not be presumed by outer force or law. I believe that morality is subject of inner conscious and can be teach by example and regular practice.
So, we decided to go for hunger strike until they do not hug each other and promise us that they will not involve in violence anymore. In hunger strike I was accompanied by Chuuni Lal, Salil Srivastava, Udai Raj, and Neelkamal.
I would love to call it victory of Gandhian Philosophy and our mentor Sri Sandeep Pandey [ Social Activist & Magsaysay award winner], that after almost 12 hours strike they agreed on non violence, and promised us in written that they will not drink liquor, will not gamble, and will respect their girls and wives.
In our definition of Non-violence we have included domestic violence too.
I am attaching the agreement paper with few photographs.
They agreed on following points,-
1. Total prohibition of Gambling
2. Total prohibition of Liquor
3. Total prohibition of Domestic violence
4. Adoption of non-violence
5.Following the highest standard of Asha Parivar, our organisation.
We are also experimenting by electing a women committee [ MAHILA PANCHAYAT], who will work as their own court of settlement on various disagreements and disobeying of agreement.
